Creating a texture overlay with a dynamic image
Dynamic images are a great way to add a texture overlay to a preview to make
it more realistic.
With a dynamic image, you can add a png element on top of your preview to give
it texture and shadow effects.
This is great to use on products where customers can upload their pictures if
the surface where the picture is printed (or engraved, or embroidered) has an
interesting texture.
notion image
On the left you can see a preview without texture, the uploaded image by the
customer looks very flat. On the right you can see the same preview with a PNG
overlay, the picture uploaded by the customer has the texture of the t-shirt
giving it the proper effect of it being printed on the garment.

To add a texture overlay with a dynamic image

  1. Add a dynamic image by clicking add dynamic image
  1. While on position one click upload an image
  1. Browse for the file you want to use as a overlay
  1. Resize and reposition the dynamic image so it is placed correctly on top of the preview background
Important:
Since you are applying a transparent texture to the preview, the image you use
needs to be a PNG with transparency.
  • * *

Textures and background images:

Since using the texture overlays obviously adds more texture to the preview,
we recommend removing some texture from the background image. One way to do it
is to make the background image flat (solid color), so when the texture is
applied it looks good and not over-texturized.
This is the background picture we used for the t-shirt example at the top:

Background picture

notion image
As you can see the picture is quite flat. We removed the texture from the
t-shirt and made it solid white. All you can notice is the background and the
shadow.
After we add the texture overlay it will look like this:
notion image
  • * *

How to prepare PNGs to use as texture overlay

If you don't have a texture PNG for your product, here is a simple guide on
how to create one and save it as a PNG.
Keep in mind you will need Photoshop or a similar photo editing software
to achieve this.

1. Get a good clear image of your product that shows the texture

Having the right photos to work with is fundamental. We recommend using light
photos, of white or lightly colored versions of the product.
In this case, we are going to use the following picture for a t-shirt.
notion image
Open the photograph on Photoshop to be able to edit it.

2. Crop the texture and copy

Grab the select tool and select the entire element that has the texture,
in this case, we are going to select the entire t-shirt.
notion image
Once you have it selected, copy the selection.

3. Create a new black layer

Create a new layer, and paint it black (#00000)
notion image

4. Add a mask to that layer

Add a mask to that layer, by hitting the Add layer button
notion image

5. Paste texture inside the mask

On Mac Option + Click , on Windows Alt + Click , the layer mask to
enter edit mode.
Once there paste the texture in place
(on Mac: Cmd + Shift + v / on Windows: Ctrl + Shift + v)
notion image
Then clear selection (on Mac: Cmd + d / on Windows: Ctrl + d), and
invert colors, so you'll get something like this.
notion image
Click anywhere on the screen to exit mask editing mode.

6. Adjust brightness and contrast to improve texture appearance

Select the layer's mask and adjust brightness and contrast to add or remove
strength to the texture.
To better see how the texture will look, add a solid color background below,
this will help you see the light and shadow effect the texture gives to any
element that is below it.
notion image
Play around with the values until you find what looks better for your texture.
Increasing brightness will make the texture stronger (darker shadows) while
reducing it will make the texture lighter. Decreasing contrast will darken the
texture, increasing it will make lights and shadows crisper.

7. Save layer as PNG

Grab the texture layer you created, right-click it and hit **quick export as
PNG**. This will create a transparent layer with the texture for you to use on
your previews.
notion image
💡 Tip:
You can also add non-transparent elements to the texture overlay, to cover
parts of the design. The phone case example below is great to see this. In
that case, the camera of the phone was added to the overlay, since on the
preview it should always cover whatever picture the customer uploads to the
phone case.

Examples of textures applied on previews

Here are some examples of great use of textures on previews

How to use dynamic images as text.
In this tutorial you'll learn how to add text using dynamic images. This is
very useful if you want to create personalizations that involve more artistic
text (not just a plain font). For example if you offer diamond studded
jewelry, multi-color wooden letters, or chocolate letters on a cake, you can
do this with Customily!
notion image
To create this effect we are going to work with image libraries, and dynamic
images. Follow the steps below to achieve it.

1. Create a library with the images (or vectors) of your alphabet

  1. Go to Libraries > **Image libraries***(or[**Vector libraries**** depending on what you want to use).**
  1. ClickAdd library.
  1. Add the images (or vectors) of all the letters for your library. Follow the chart below to know in which position to upload each letter. We recommend you at least upload all the letters from the alphabet so customers will be able to type without any issues.
notion image
Important
It is very important you follow the chart above, and upload each image of your
letters in it's corresponding option. **You should always leave the first
option empty, and start by uploading the letter A on option 2,** otherwise
this won't work.
notion image

2. Create a dynamic image (or dynamic vector) for each letter on your

personalization
  1. Create a dynamic image or dynamic vector (depending on what you are using) for each letter. The amount of characters depends on how many letters you want your customers to be able to type.
notion image
  1. The Id for the dynamic images/vectors needs to be consecutive. In this case, we've created 5 elements from ID 1 to ID 5, because customers will be able to type a max. of 5 characters.
notion image
  1. Assign the library you've previously created to each of the dynamic
elements in your template.
To add your library click on the element you want to edit from your layers'
list. And click on Pick library. Choose the library you've created.
notion image
  1. The spacing can be controlled in both steps of the template by moving the
container to the required position.
notion image

3. Creating the options set

To allow your customers to add their text you need to create a**Text Input
option** in your options set.
  1. On your options set clickAdd Option. Then choose option typetext input.
notion image
  1. Under Customily functions choose "Dynamic vector/ Dynamic Image".
notion image
  1. Then, you will need to add the ID for the element where the first letter will be placed. In our case is ID 1.
notion image
notion image
  1. Set a limit for the max length of characters so the customer's text does not exceed the letters we created for this product, in this case it was 5.
notion image
  1. Save your option set, then go to the product you want to use it with and assign the option set to it. Once the product is saved you'll be able to personalize with images as text!

Creating a mix-and-match preview using Dynamic Images
Dynamic images are a great tool to create mix-and-match previews. By
combining different dynamic images, you can have customers change different
parts of a preview independently, to create unique mix-and-match
personalizations.
notion image

Prepare your images to create a mix-and-match preview

In order to create a mix-and-match preview, first, you'll need to have all the
pictures that will compose the preview.
In the example of the sneaker above, we have different pictures for the toe
cap and heel, for the tongue and the heel tab, and for the stitch detail.
Here's an example of the 3 different images used in the toe cap and heel
notion image
Important
All images used to create the mix-and-match preview need to be in PNG
format with a transparent background. This way you can make sure the rest
of the sections of the preview will be always visible.
Once you have all the images ready, you can create the preview on Customily

To create a mix-and-match preview with Dynamic Images

  1. Make sure you are on Step 2 editing the preview
  1. Add a dynamic image for the first personalizable part of the preview by clicking add dynamic image
  1. While on position one click upload an image
  1. Shift + select all the different photos you want to upload into that dynamic image
  1. Resize and reposition the dynamic image so it is placed correctly on top of the preview background
  1. Repeat step 2 through 6 to add all the different personalizable part of the mix-and-match preview.
At the end of the process, you will have multiple dynamic images arranged
around the preview to form the mix-and-match product. It will look something
like this:
notion image
Where each dotted line is a different dynamic image, that controls a specific
part of the sneaker.

How to Create a Drop-Shadow Text Effect
On this tutorial, we are going to learn how to create a drop-shadow effect on
text boxes.
A drop shadow is a visual effect consisting of a drawing element which
looks like the shadow of an object, giving the impression that the object is
raised above the objects behind it. In this case a text box.

To create a drop shadow effect

  1. Create a new template or open the template you want to work with
  1. Add a new text box
  1. Resize, position and format the textbox as needed
  1. Once you are done editing the element, select it and click the
duplicate button.
notion image
  1. The duplicated layer will appear on the page, and the layer panel. Double
click the layer on the layer panel to rename it so we can easily identify it.
notion image
  1. Drag the layer to the bottom, so it will be behind the foreground text.
  1. Add opacity to the shadow by expanding the color toolbox.
notion image
Tip
Opacity works great for shadows, but you can do this to achieve different
effects. For example if you use a ligher color as a shadow you can get a great
bevel effect. You can also use solid colors on the shadow layer to create nice
two colored texts.
  1. Reposition the shadow so it looks good.
Pro tip
Lock the foreground text (the first text box you created) so it will be easier
to move the shadow around.
notion image
notion image
And there you have it, now we will look how to connect this template to your
store.

Adding shadows exclusively on the preview

If you want shadows to be visible on the preview, for example to create an
embossed effect, you simply need to turn off the shadow layer on your print
file settings on step 1.
  1. Before moving to step 2 (preview settings) turn off the shadow layer by
clicking the eye icon
notion image
  1. Click next to move on to step 2
  1. Set your preview background image
  1. Turn the shadow layer back on by clicking the eye icon
notion image
Pro tip
You can adjust the coloring of the shadow, as well as the coloring of the
foreground layer on the preview to make it look as realistic as possible.
Try coloring the top layer with a light color and transparency, to get a great
embossing effect.

  1. Finally, you will get to the final step. The product preview is where you
will be able to see the finished product.
From here, you can do several things:
  • Play around with the personalization options, as your customers will do to check how everything works.
  • Save a preview as the product image of your Shopify listing (recommended!)
  • Edit product details, such as title, description, and prices.
  • Edit the personalization options, such as the titles or the order of the different option sets. The option sets are generated automatically by Customily, but you can modify them if needed to improve the way your clients interact with the product!
  • Save the product as a draft.
  • Publish the product in your Shopify store!
